Theme: WALKING AS CHILDREN OF LIGHT

The texts and comments under this theme are exhortations for us to reflect on and take stock of ourselves in regard to how we conduct our lives as Christians, and by so doing rededicate ourselves to the course of righteousness, by His grace.

To walk means to move along on foot. It means to pursue a course of action or way of life. The word “children” means converts or believers in God. Light is the illumination that makes sight possible. (Matthew 6:22,23)  It is the first creation after the heavens and earth. But God Almighty is light personified.  (See 1 Timothy 6:16; Exodus 33:20) While the children of Israel were journeying to the Promised Land, there was a pillar of fire to guide them by giving them light by night. (Exodus 13:21,22) This was symbolic of His presence and His guiding hand which served to encourage and strengthen the people through the hard, tortuous journey in the wilderness. “Walking as children of light” therefore means ensuring that our thoughts, utterances, actions, and reactions are in harmony with the will of God Almighty as taught by Jesus Christ and expressed in His Word, the Holy Bible.

Text: “I the LORD have called thee in righteousness, and will hold thine hand, and will keep thee, and give thee for a covenant of the people, for a light of the Gentiles.” – Isaiah 42:6

Comment: The Holy Bible here refers to Jesus Christ as “a light of the Gentiles”. This statement was echoed by Simeon at the presentation of Jesus Christ in the temple when he said: “Lord, now lettest thou thy servant depart in peace, according to thy word:  For mine eyes have seen thy salvation, Which thou hast prepared before the face of all people; A light to lighten the Gentiles, and the glory of thy people Israel.” – Luke 2:29-32.

Jesus Christ lived up to the prophecy made about him by God’s grace.  Concerning him Apostle John said:  “In him was life; and the life was the light of men.” (John 1:4) He himself left no one in doubt as to his pre-eminent position as the Guide, Example and Teacher of the people of God, when he stated: “I am the light of the world: he that followeth me shall not walk in darkness, but shall have the light of life.” – John 8:12.

Following the light of Christ means abiding by the truth which he brought and which gives life. (John 14:6)  Those who are of good heart condition will always seek guidance from and follow the laws of God. The prophet David stated: “Thy word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path.” (Psalm 119:105. See also Proverbs 6:23). We should pray God to help us to always follow His laws, doctrines, instructions so as to have life and peace. – Psalm 36:9.
