Theme: OVERCOMING TEMPTATIONS

Text: “For we have not an high priest which cannot be touched with the feeling of our infirmities; but was in all points tempted like as we are, yet without sin.” – Hebrews 4:15.

Comment: The case of our Lord and Master Jesus Christ, perhaps provides encouragement as we often feel that the world is bearing in on us alone, and that others are immune to temptations. For the fact that our Saviour was tempted shows that all human creatures are subject to it.

In overcoming what the devil brought on his way, Christ relied firmly on the word of God as contained in the Bible. (Matthew 4:1-11) Each of Satan’s temptations was met with the same answer: “It is written,” followed by a Scripture. If Jesus used the Bible to effectively end the temptations, (which we know works because after three failed efforts, “the Devil left him”), we too should use it to resist our own temptations. All our efforts to resist temptations will be weak and ineffective unless they are based on faith in the word of God through constant reading, studying and meditating on the Word of God as contained in the Bible. – Romans 12:2.

One of the powerful weapons against temptation is “sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God.” (Ephesians 6:17) Apostle James says: “Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.” – James 4:7.

The Psalmist declared: “Surely he shall deliver thee from the snare of the fowler, and from the noisome pestilence. He shall cover thee with his feathers, and under his wings shalt thou trust: his truth shall be thy shield and buckler.” – Psalm 91:3, 4.
