Text: “…All therefore whatsoever they bid you observe, that observe and do: but do not ye after their works: for they say, and do not.” – Matthew 23:1-3.
Comment: Exemplary conduct is crucial to effective leadership as the leader would be able to act with greater authority and inspire trust and confidence of the followers when he leads in keeping the rules. They are not to be as “The Scribes and Pharisees” mentioned by Jesus Christ in today’s text. Those were hypocrites whose private lives were contrary or different from their public speeches. Leaders should lead by example. (James 2:12) In teaching humility, our Lord Jesus Christ practicalized it by washing his disciples’ feet. (John 13:1-15) People take greater notice of and are commonly moved by what their leaders do than what they say, hence it is commonly said that “action speaks louder than words.” “For unto whomsoever much is given”, declared Jesus Christ, “of him shall be much required: and to whom men have committed much, of him they will ask the more.” – Luke 12:47, 48.
