Text: “Be ye therefore followers of God, as dear children; And have no fellowship with the unfruitful works of darkness, but rather reprove them. Be not ye therefore partakers with them.” – Ephesians 5:1, 11, 7.
Comment: To have “fellowship with the unfruitful works of darkness” implies bringing one’s self at par with evildoers, such that there is no difference between “he that believeth with an infidel”. The injunction conveyed in 2 Corinthians 6:14-18, James 4:4, and 1 John 2:15-17, as well as the text under review, predates this Christian era. God had earlier shown His dislike for unwholesome relationship between His people and unbelievers. (Exodus 23:2, Jeremiah 10:1, 2) To hold a vile person in contempt is to hold the ungodly in low esteem. Even among converts, there should be a limit to our dealings with those who persist in evil despite repeated warnings from the servants of God. (Romans 16:17, 18) Such expressions as “afterall nobody is perfect”, “you are not the first and you will definitely not be the last”, etc., neither edify nor make them realize their error. The charge conveyed in verse 11 is definite, “but rather reprove them.” See also 1 Timothy 5:20; Titus 1:9-14.
