Text: “Moreover thou shalt provide out of all the people able men, such as fear God, men of truth, hating covetousness; and place such over them, to be rulers of thousands, and rulers of hundreds, rulers of fifties, and rulers of tens.” – Exodus 18:21.
Comment: Leaders should not be chosen on the bases of good looks, charisma, wealth, popularity, willingness to follow popular trends, etc. It is common these days to see leaders being chosen so that they would work, not for the general good but for the benefit of few individuals who see themselves as their sponsors. The qualifications given by St. Paul for those to be chosen as leaders in the Church among other things state that they must be blameless, sober, of good behavior, given to hospitality, apt to teach; Not given to wine, not greedy of filthy lucre. They should be able to rule their houses well. They should not be new to leadership positions, lest they be overtaken with pride. (1 Timothy 3:1-12) When Samuel the prophet was sent by God to anoint the one of the sons of Jesse who will be the future king of Israel, He told him not to judge based on outward appearance because it is the heart condition that God judges in appointing people into offices or giving them assignments. -1 Samuel 16:6, 7.
