Theme:THE FUTILITY OF WORLDLY WISDOM

Text: “Don’t deceive yourselves. If any of you think you are wise in the ways of this world, you should give up that wisdom in order to become really wise. The wisdom of this world is nonsense in God’s sight. That’s why scripture says, ‘God catches the wise in their cleverness.’ Again scripture says, ‘The Lord knows that the thoughts of the wise are pointless.” – 1 Corinthians 3:18-20 (God’s Word Translation).

Comment: Human wisdom fails man. At the root of it, it is human pride, arrogance and haughtiness. Man wants to use his human wisdom to find an answer to spiritual things but in reality, the answer becomes human. Applying worldly wisdom to scriptural matters is futile. There is an increase of worldly wisdom that is pervasive in our society, but it is not true wisdom. The resurrection of Jesus Christ cannot be fully understood by logical reasoning because it involves a supernatural act that man cannot comprehend. To the prideful and rational mind of man it is foolishness to believe such teaching but it is the power of God unto salvation. Apostle Paul in the leading text for today shows that, “For after that in the wisdom of God the world by wisdom knew not God, but it pleased God by the foolishness of preaching to save them that believe.” (1 Corinthians 1:21) The problem with worldly wisdom is the self-deceit belief in themselves to be ultimately wise and enlightened, yet foolish. God has actually made foolish the wisdom of this world.
