Text: “Thou shalt have no other gods before me. Thou shalt not make unto thee any graven image, or any likeness of anything that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth: Thou shalt not bow down thyself to them, nor serve them…” – Exodus 20:3-5.
Comment: Today’s text emphasises the position of God Almighty on worship of false gods. His name Jealous (Exodus 34:14) shows that His worship should not be extended to other gods. Speaking through Isaiah the prophet, God Himself declared: “I am the LORD: that is my name: and my glory will I not give to another, neither my praise to graven images.” (Isaiah 42:8). Any form of devotion to idols or images by a worshipper of God is interfaith and it is dangerous.
Some people knowingly or unknowingly have some form of idols (images) they have attached themselves to. They, like Rachel, the wife of Jacob, have an image in their possession (Genesis 31:34,35) or a ring, waistband, talisman, cross, or any piece of ornament that they secretly have some devotion for. True worshippers should abhor anything tainted with idol. Idols are valueless, horrible, detestable and disgusting as they have no saving power but rather put one in bondage of guilty conscience at all times. May God Almighty give us the courage to avoid these practices by His grace and power. – Isaiah 8:19,20; Isaiah 42:17.
