Theme: THE SIGNIFICANCE OF A GOOD PERSONAL IDENTITY
Text: “When Jesus came into the coast of Caesarea Philippi, he asked his disciples, saying, Who do men say that I the Son of man am? …He saith unto them, But whom say ye that I am? And Simon Peter answered and said, Thou art the Christ, the Son of the living God. And Jesus answered and said unto him, Blessed art thou, Simon Barjona: for flesh and blood hath not revealed it unto thee, but my Father which is in heaven.” – Matthew 16:13-17.
Comment: The identity of our Saviour Jesus Christ mattered to him: he spoke clearly and left no one in doubt. Earlier, John the Baptist utilized every opportunity to restate his position as fore-runner of Jesus Christ: “…he said, Whom think ye that I am? I am not he, But, behold, there cometh one after me, whose shoes of his feet I am not worthy to loose.” (Acts 13:25; Mark 1:7) He identified Jesus Christ as “The Lamb of God, which taketh away the sin of the world.” (John 1: 29) At Christ’s baptism, the Almighty God identified him as, “…my beloved Son in Whom I am well pleased” (Matthew 3:16,17); at his birth, the three wise men identified and gave him significant gifts (Matthew 2:11); Simeon made prophetic declarations concerning Jesus Christ (Luke 2:25-35). Despite all of these copious pointers, the natural Jews were still pathetically ignorant of Christ’s identity, authority and mission; just like some who find it hard to understand the difference between God the Father, and Jesus Christ, the Son of God. – John 1:1-3; 1 Corinthians 8:5, 6.
