Theme: Christians and Vows

Text: “And Jephthah came to Mizpeh unto his house, and, behold, his daughter came out to meet him with timbrels and with dances and she was his only child, beside her he had neither son nor daughter.” – Judges 11:34.

Comment: True worshippers of God should make vows and demonstrate a passion to fulfil them as David the prophet said: “Offer unto God thanksgiving, and pay thy vows unto the most high”. (Psalm 50:14) This understanding is what gave rise to the seeming regret and feeling of loss in the unwavering answer of Jephthah to his daughter who submitted herself to the father’s vow when he said: “…for I have opened my mouth unto the LORD, and I cannot go back.” (Judges 11:35, 36 David a prophet of the Most High God was moved by the spirit of God to state that one of hallmarks for those that would abide in the tabernacle of the LORD is the man who swears to his own hurt and refuses to change. – Psalm 15:4; Judges 11:39; Isaiah 19:21.
