Theme: DIGNITY OF LABOUR

Text: “Seest thou a man diligent in his business? He shall stand before kings, he shall not stand before mean men.” – Proverbs 22:29.

Comment:  Searching for a job is one thing, getting an offer is another and, making a success of it is yet another.  One who painstakingly applies himself to doing the will of God and doing his duties efficiently will find favour with godly employers and fellow workers –  “he shall stand before kings; he shall not stand before mean men”.  Daniel the Prophet in the kingdoms of Medes and Persia, was such an one.  Inspite of his being in captivity with his people, he remained level-headed, industrious, humble, faithful, loyal and conscientious.  He conducted himself honourably in his job and no fault was found in him.  This made the king to prefer him over the nobles by reason of which he was promoted above them.  And “because an excellent spirit was found in him,” “… the King thought to set him over the whole realm.” – Daniel 6:3.

The child of God should have the qualities that make for what the above text describes as “an excellent spirit.”  The devotion and honour which Daniel had would be the lot of every Christian who is God-fearing, “diligent in his business” and faithful in his duties or work.  King Solomon under divine inspiration stated: “He becometh poor that dealeth with a slack hand: but the hand of the diligent maketh rich.”  “The soul of the sluggard desireth, and hath nothing: but the soul of the diligent shall be made fat.” – Proverbs 10:4; 13:4.
