Theme: Self-Examination

Text: “And the brethren immediately sent away Paul and Silas by night unto Berea: who coming thither went into the synagogue of the Jews.  These were more noble than those in Thessalonica, in that they received the word with all readiness of mind, and searched the scriptures daily, whether those things were so.” – Acts 17:10, 11.

Comment: The people in Berea showed good example of how those who genuinely are seeking after the truth should conduct themselves. Gone are the days of the divine right of the clergy, when people swallowed hook, line and sinker anything that comes from the pulpit. This is the age of enlightenment when the mysteries of God are revealed to the servants of God. (Ephesians 3:3-6) Isaiah the Prophet enjoined us thus: “To the law and to the testimony: if they speak not according to this word, it is because there is no light in them.” (Isaiah 8:20) Belief in such strange and false doctrines will not lead one to everlasting life. Therefore, the need to search the Scriptures regularly in order to understand the will of God and to worship Him in spirit and in truth so as to be blessed and saved in the end cannot be overemphasized. – Psalm 1:1-3; John 4:24.
