Text: “Honour the LORD with thy substance, and with the first fruits of all thine increase: So shall thy barns be filled with plenty, and thy presses shall burst out with new wine”. -Proverbs 3:9,10.

Comment: The above text is a command by God to true Christians that we should always serve God with the material things He has given to us. “The first of the firstfruits of thy land thou shalt bring into the house of the LORD thy God…” – Exodus 23:19.

God Almighty commanded the Israelites that when they got to the land of Canaan they should put the first of all the fruits of their harvest in a basket and shall give it to the priest in the temple in order to get more of His benefits. – Deuteronomy 26:8-10.

In the days of Haggai the prophet, the people were negligent of their duties in regard to supporting the work of God with their material resources. God was not happy with them but charged them to use the fruits of their labour to build His house. (Haggai 1:4-9) We should also recall what the liberal disposition of a woman who poured the contents of a box of precious or very costly ointment on Jesus Christ as he sat down to eat. His disciples thought it was a waste of money but the Master made them to understand the spiritual significance of what she had done and pronounced an everlasting blessing on her. “Verily I say unto you, Wheresoever this gospel shall be preached in the whole world, there shall also this, that this woman hath done, be told for a memorial of her.” – Matthew 26:6-13.
