Text: “There was in the days of Herod, the king of Judea, a certain priest named Zacharias, …and his wife was of the daughters of Aaron, and her name was Elizabeth. And they were both righteous before God…” – Luke 1:5, 6.
Comment: The Funk and Wagnall’s College Standard Dictionary defines a righteous person as one “Conforming in disposition and conduct to the divine standard of right and justice; an upright, virtuous and blameless person”. This definition is in agreement with the Holy Bible. One who does the will of God, obeys His commandments or hates to offend God is a righteous person. Thus Zechariah and his wife walked in “all the commandments and ordinances of the Lord blameless.” It is therefore not surprising that in the end God blessed them with a child who became John the Baptist in spite of their old age. Reference can also be made to Abraham, Moses, Simeon, Sarah, Ruth, Abigail and a host of others as revealed in the Holy Bible. They were all righteous.
