Theme: GREED

Text: “And he said unto them, Take heed, and beware of covetousness: for a man’s life consisted not in the abundance of the things which he possesseth” – Luke 12:15

Comment: In the text for today, Jesus Christ warned us against greed and covetousness because our being alive is not because of the property we have amassed. The Rich Fool, after assuring himself that he had enough because of the largeness of his harvest did not reckon with God Almighty Who gave him life and blessed him with the increase: ”But God said unto him, Thou fool, this night thy soul shall be required of thee: then whose shall those things be, which thou hast provided? So is he that layeth up treasure for himself, and is not rich toward God.” – Luke 12:20, 21.

King Solomon gave the understanding that when the breath of life leaves one, such a one cannot go with his riches, rather they are left behind to be inherited, sometimes by people he did not know while alive:  “Yea, I hated all my labour which I had taken under the sun: because I should leave it unto the man that shall be after me. And who knoweth whether he shall be a wise man or a fool? yet shall he have rule over all my labour wherein I have laboured, and wherein I have shewed myself wise under the sun. This is also vanity.” – Ecclesiastes 2:18, 19.

God Almighty warned: “Thou shall not covet thy neighbour’s house, thou shall not covet thy neighbour’s wife, nor his manservant, nor his maidservant, nor his ox, nor his ass, nor anything that is thy neighbour’s” – Exodus 20:17.
