Theme: GIVING GOD THE KIND OF WORSHIP HE DESERVES

Text: “Ye hypocrites, well did Esaias prophesy of you saying. This people draweth nigh unto me with their mouth, and honoureth me with their lips; but their heart is far from me. But in vain they do worship me, teaching for doctrines the commandments of men.” – Matthew 15:7-9.

Comment: Today’s text highlights the activities of hypocritical worshippers, who are good pretenders.  They say one thing and do the other. They are neither hot nor cold. They are found everywhere.  Sometimes, they are more prominent than those who are sincere and faithful in their worship to God. In worshipping God, we should not be like the Scribes and Pharisees who were notorious for their hypocrisy. (Matthew 23:2, 3; Luke 12:1, 2) The text also emphasizes the need to have a good heart condition in our service to God. (Proverbs 4:23) Those whose worship is tainted with “eyeservice” or “menpleasing” and “commandments of men”, so as to obtain the praise of men, would not be blessed by God. Apostle Paul warns: “Not with eyeservice, as menpleasers; but as the servants of Christ, doing the will of God from the heart…” – Ephesians 6:6-8.
