Theme: Christians and Vows

Text: “But every vow of a widow, and of her that is divorced, wherewith they have bound their souls, shall stand against her.” – Numbers 30:9.

Comment: Vows are irrevocable declarations, oaths or affirmations made by a worshipper of God in dire situations, or in a form of request for some special gifts from God. The law as ordained by the LORD to the children needs the consent of the man, a male parent or husband, for the vow to subsist in the sight of the LORD. (Numbers 30:3-10) The Almighty God made a clear distinction in the observance of vows between a widow and a woman who has a husband. In the text for today, a widow or female divorcee have the privilege of making vows that cannot be voided. (Numbers 30:9) For worshippers of the living God, our concern is knowing what the LORD requires as we make our vows and endevouring to fulfil them accordingly. King David, the prophet of God said: “Offer unto God thanksgiving, and pay thy vows unto the most High.” – Psalm 50:14. See also Psalm 56:12; 61:5, etc.
