Text: “I know thy works, and thy labour, and thy patience, and how thou canst not bear them which are evil: and thou hast tried them which say they are apostles, and are not, and hast found them liars: Nevertheless I have somewhat against thee, because thou hast left thy first love.” – Revelation 2:2,4.
Comment: To leave one’s first love is to lose interest in godly activities which hitherto occupied a central part of one’s endeavours. That is, to become lukewarm owing to offences or trials. This was noticed in the church of Ephesus, despite the commendation showered on them in verses 2 and 3 of Revelation chapter 4.
Our zeal for God’s work should cut across both the good and trying times, remembering the words of king Solomon, to wit, “If thou faint in the day of adversity, thy strength is small.” (Proverbs 24:10) Our sustained zeal in the midst of afflictions is a way of bluffing the devil. When offences come, the Bible tells us to give place unto wrath. (Romans 12:19) For no reason therefore, should we become weak in faith and begin to show decline in spiritual activities, thereby giving the devil the luxury of the last laugh, God forbid!
