Theme: TO DO GOOD AND TO COMMUNICATE, FORGET NOT

Text: “And the king said, Is there not yet any of the house of Saul, that I may shew the kindness of God unto him? And Ziba said unto the king, Jonathan hath yet a son, which is lame on his feet.” – 2 Samuel 9:3.

Comment: After God had given David victory from his enemies and the restoration of calm to Israel, he remembered his fallen friend, Jonathan whose unquestionable love and dedication to him informed the question in today’s text. Recall that David and Jonathan had deep affection for each other before the latter was killed in a battle. (2 Samuel 1:17-27) David’s post-humous appreciation to Mephibosheth, Jonathan’s ailing son was to reciprocate the mutual trust and spiritual bond between Jonathan and himself, which he described as “passing the love of women”. To the son, King David said: “Fear not: for I will surely shew thee kindness for Jonathan thy father’s sake, and will restore thee all the land of Saul thy father; and thou shalt eat bread at my table continually. (2 Samuel 9:7) Consequently, the King instructed Ziba, Jonathan’s servant to bring in fruits from the field so that Mephibosheth would eat at the royal court always. Indeed, “one good turn”, it is often said, “deserves another”.
