Theme: COPING WITH LONELINESS

Text: “Turn to me and be gracious to me, for I am lonely and afflicted. The troubles of my heart are enlarged; bring me out of my distresses. Consider my affliction and my trouble, and forgive all my sins. Consider how many are my foes, and with what violent hatred they hate me. Oh, guard my soul, and deliver me! Let me not be put to shame, for I take refuge in you…” – Psalm 25:16-21. (English Standard Version)

Comment: This is a direct call on God by the Prophet David at one of his lowest moments. He states clearly that he is lonely and afflicted. This is a good example for the lonely believer to copy. In times of loneliness let us call on God. (Isaiah 45:22,24,25;  1 Peter 5:6,7).  This is a strong prayer for help. The cause and nature of one man’s affliction may be different from another. For example, death in the family, of a spouse or child or cousin, is one form of affliction. A son or daughter who is a drug addict is a form of affliction. Childlessness is a form of affliction. Unemployment of the head of the family is an affliction too. Anyone who finds himself in such situations should call on Jehovah God with faith. The final point he makes is that God should not leave him in shame. There are some situations that could lead to shame. If we call on God with faith, God will intervene if it is His will to reverse the situation.  – Jeremiah 33:3;  Romans 8:31,35-39;  Psalm 31:17; 37:19
