Theme: BIBLE PERSPECTIVES ON LEADERSHIP

INTRODUCTION:

By Simple definition, “LEADERSHIP” is the art of moving persons and organizations toward the fulfillment of specific goals.  Leadership is exercised at various levels of government, organization and family.  While some persons are naturally endowed with gifts to lead people, it is also true that some develop the ability and knowledge through formal and informal training and experience. However, the most essential quality needed by anyone for leadership role is clearly expressed in the Holy Scriptures – the word of God.

Text: “The God of Israel said, the Rock of Israel spake to me, He that ruleth over men must be just, ruling in the fear of God.” – 2 Samuel 23:3.

Comment: The fear of God is the most important quality required for leadership as can be clearly understood in the declaration by King David in today’s text. One who fears God departs from evil. (Proverbs 16:6) The fear of God is crucial because a leader is subject to various pressures and temptations which may lure him to be selfish, partial, unjust or vindictive.  When a leader knows that each person will give account of himself to God, he will be very careful and will avoid breaking the laws of God by words or action, whether secretly or openly.  Nehemiah, the governor had the fear of God, he refrained himself from dealing with the people unjustly and never allowed his servants to oppress the people. (Nehemiah 5:15) “It is an abomination to kings to commit wickedness”. – Proverbs 16:12.
