Theme: THE PURPOSE OF MAN ON EARTH

Text: “And behold joy and gladness, slaying oxen, and killing sheep, eating flesh, and drinking wine: let us eat and drink; for to morrow we shall die.” – Isaiah 22:13.

Comment: Human beings love pleasure. However, the purpose of God for creating man is not to eat and drink and have pleasure of life without regard to spiritual things. It is only the Almighty God that can satisfy and completely fulfil man’s needs. All the pleasures man runs after are vanity. (Ecclesiastes 2:1, 11) It is inevitable that man must die except those who have the special grace to pass through the great tribulation. Some think that they must as well enjoy the pleasures of life while it lasts, and give themselves to pleasure, dissipation, and revelry. The inevitability of death should make man think soberly and endeavour to live up to God’s purpose. The Psalmist stated: “LORD, make me to know mine end, and the measure of my days, what it is; that I may know how frail I am. Behold, thou hast made my days as an handbreadth; and mine age is as nothing before thee: verily every man at his best state is altogether vanity. Surely every man walketh in a vain shew: surely they are disquieted in vain: he heapeth up riches, and knoweth not who shall gather them. And now, Lord, what wait I for? my hope is in thee.” – Psalm 39:4-7. See also Ecclesiastes 6:12.
