Theme: COMMENTARY ON THE BOOK OF JUDE

Text:  “Woe unto them! for they have gone in the way of Cain, and ran greedily after the error of Balaam for reward, and perished in the gainsaying of Core.” – Jude 11.

Comment:  Cain and Balaam, are self-conceited and mischievous people who opposed righteousness and caused deaths among the people of God.  Apostle John says we should not be like “Cain, who was of that wicked one, and slew his brother. And wherefore slew he him? Because his own works were evil and his brother’s righteous.,”  (1 John 3:12) Balaam was a sorcerer who was engaged by Balak, king of Moab, to curse the people of God. But God turned his curse into blessing.  To show how mischievous he was, he advised Balak to engage Israel in idolatry and to use the women of Moab to entice the men of Israel.  This bad counsel led Israel into whoredom and idolatry for which 24,000 Israelites were slain. (Numbers 25:1-9; 31:16; 2 Pe 2:15)  Korah  was a Levite, a cousin of Moses (for their fathers Izhar and Amram were brothers, Exodus 6:16-21) They led 250 men of renown and not a small part of the congregation to rebel against Moses and Aaron, and so against God Almighty.  Eventually they were swallowed up by an earthquake, according to the word of Moses. The 250 men who offered incense and worked with them were consumed by fire.  The next day 14,700 of the Jews who murmured against Moses saying “ye have killed the people of the LORD” died from a plague that broke out among them. (Numbers 16:46-50)Those who are carnally-minded  and arrogant will suffer the same destruction. – Romans 15:4.
