Theme: PRECEPTS FROM THE LORD JESUS CHRIST

Text: “Ye worship ye know not what: we know what we worship: for salvation is of the Jews. God is a Spirit: and they that worship him must worship him in spirit and in truth.” – John 4:22,24.

Comment: Our Lord Jesus Christ in his conversation with the woman of Samaria has long settled the dispute as to where to go to worship God by declaring that it is not important. The woman said “Our fathers worshipped in this mountain; and ye say, that in Jerusalem is the place where men ought to worship.” But Jesus said to her “Woman, believe me, the hour cometh, when ye shall neither in this mountain, nor yet at Jerusalem, worship the Father.”  He added, “But the hour cometh, and now is, when the true worshippers shall worship the Father in spirit and in truth: for the Father seeketh such to worship him.” – John 4:21-24.

St. Paul also gives us the understanding that people of God no longer look to the literal Jerusalem in Palestine but to the spiritual Jerusalem, the Kingdom of God. “For this Agar is mount Sinai in Arabia, and answereth to Jerusalem which now is, and is in bondage with her children.  But Jerusalem which is above is free, which is the mother of us all.” (Galatians 4:25, 26) The true worshippers are those who have the spirit of God as could be seen in their character, which comes about through the belief and practise of the truth. (Galatians 5:22, 23; Romans 8:5,9)  We should pray for the spirit of God so as to have the qualities that would enable us serve Him acceptably. – Luke 11:13.
