Theme: LORD, WHO SHALL ABIDE IN THY TABERNACLES?

Text: “If a man vow a vow unto the LORD, or swear an oath to bind his soul with a bond; he shall not break his word, he shall do according to all that proceedeth out of his mouth.” –  Number 30:2.

Comment: Consistent with the righteous in their resolve to remain in God’s Mountain, is the insistence on staying true to their words, not minding the changing circumstance. It is against moral principle for one to make a promise in the euphoria of the moment one finds himself, only to default afterwards. The preacher, Solomon, exhorts: “Be not rash with thy mouth, and let not thine heart be hasty to utter any thing before God: for God is in heaven, and thou upon earth: therefore let thy words be few. When thou vowest a vow unto God, defer not to pay it; for he hath no pleasure in fools: pay that which thou hast vowed. Better is it that thou shouldest not vow, than that thou shouldest vow and not pay.” (Ecclesiastes 5:2, 4, 5)  One swears to his own hurt when he shows uncommon faith in God’s providence or help, by going out of his way in vowing to give to God what ordinarily may appear to be beyond his natural capacity, even when such act may cause him deprivation or some form of inconvenience. Whether it is to God or fellow man, our words should be our bonds. – Matthew 5:33-37.
