Theme: BIBLE PERSPECTIVES ON LEADERSHIP

Text: “And David was greatly distressed; for the people spake of stoning him, because the soul of all the people was grieved, every man for his sons and for his daughters: but David encouraged himself in the LORD his God.” – 1 Samuel 30:6.

Comment: While David was away on a mission, one of the enemies of the Jews, the Amalekites, attacked the country and carried away women, children and property of David and his men. There was no small anguish among the people who blamed David for their misfortunes. Finding himself alone, because of the crisis, David had to encourage himself. This is one of the challenges leaders have to face. When there is a crisis people look up to the leader for direction and motivation. He is expected to find the right words to say to calm frayed nerves and create solutions to problems. He could find himself alone in that task.  The knowledge of God, faith and prayers are what the leader has to fall back upon. St. Paul said that when he stood to answer charges against the Jews, no man stood with him and that all men forsook him; but God stood with him and strengthened him. – 2 Timothy 4:16, 17.
