THE DANGER OF TALE BEARING AND RASH JUDGMENT
Text: “There are six things that the Lord hates, seven that are detestable to him: a false witness who pours out lies and a person who stirs up conflict in the community.” – Proverbs 6:16, 19 (New International Version).
Comment: God Almighty hates talebearers and lie-tellers, as seen in the text for today. Talebearers are false witnesses who go about peddling rumours of issues they know little or nothing about. In some cases, their actions have caused conflicts in communities, and set places on fire. Those who find themselves in such situations should heed the words of King Solomon to wit: “By mercy and truth iniquity is purged: and by the fear of the Lord men depart from evil”. (Proverbs 16:6) Isaiah the prophet encourages all such ones to also seek and return to God Almighty, so as to attract His mercy and forgiveness. As it is written: “Let the wicked forsake his way, and the unrighteous man his thoughts; let him return to the Lord, and He will have mercy on him; and to our God, for He will abundantly pardon. (Isaiah 55:7) And in verse six, the Prophet encourages such ones to seek the Lord while they still have time, and they should call upon him while He is near.
