Theme: WATCH AND PRAY

Text: “Watch ye therefore, and pray always, that ye may be accounted worthy to escape all these things that shall come to pass, and to stand before the Son of man.” – Luke 21:36.

Comment: To “Watch” in the context of the text for today means to keep a guard upon oneself against sin, and to look out or observe to see what day to day events in the light of Bible prophecies.  It is spiritual vigilance which involves diligent reading or searching of the Holy Scriptures in order to know and understand the signs of the times.  On the other hand, to “pray” is to make solemn request or petition to the Almighty God with unshaken faith for His mercy, protection and deliverance from the trouble or tribulation that will shake the whole world and destroy the wicked or ungodly at the appointed time. – Isaiah 26:21;  Joel 2:32 etc.

Jesus Christ, our Lord and Master, knowing of the trials and tribulations that people would be exposed to in these last days and the gross carelessness of some at the instance of Satan the devil, exhorted his followers, as in today’s text, to be circumspect by watching and praying always.  However, repenting and forsaking of our sins, doing of God’s will by way of keeping His commandments, and praying in accordance with His will are key to the answering of our prayers by the Almighty God. (Proverbs 28:13,14;  Isaiah 59:1-4). Scripture says: “Now we know that God heareth not sinners: but if any man be a worshipper of God, and doeth his will, him he heareth.” – John 9:31;  see also 1 John 3:22.
