Theme: BIBLE PERSPECTIVES ON LEADERSHIP
Text: “Keep back thy servant also from presumptuous sins; let them not have dominion over me: then shall I be upright, and I shall be innocent from the great transgression.” – Psalm 19:13.
Comment: Presumptuousness is a sin. Worshippers of God, particularly those in leadership positions should not overstep their bounds by stretching their hands high above their levels. Leaders should know their limitations in that each person has his own proper gift. (1 Corinthians 7:7) A leader should not assume that he had become an expert in everything just because he has climbed to the top. David, the Psalmist expressed the awareness of his limitation and the seriousness of the sin of presumptuousness in this vein: “LORD, my heart is not haughty, nor mine eyes lofty: neither do I exercise myself in great matters, or in things too high for me.” (Psalm 131:1) The leader should always know that ultimate power belongs to God Almighty and so, should submit himself to doing the will of God, not his own will. A leader who is not sure of the proper action to take on a matter, or not certain if it is within his authority to do a certain thing should by all means first consult others who have knowledge and understanding. Scriptures say: “…but in the multitude of counselors there is safety.” – Proverbs 11:14; 15:22; 13:10.
