Theme: ANGER: ITS CAUSES, EFFECTS, CONSEQUENCES AND MANAGEMENT
Text: “A soft answer turneth away wrath: but grievous words stir up anger. The tongue of the wise useth knowledge aright: but the mouth of fools poureth out foolishness… A wholesome tongue is a tree of life: but perverseness therein is a breach in the spirit” – Proverbs 15:1-4.
Comment: One major cause or fuel for anger or wrath is spoken words. Once wrong is imputed or inferred, apologies in carefully selected words becomes the balm to sooth nerves and act as a panacea to further aggravation of hostilities; which is the message being conveyed in this wise proverb of king Solomon. Sometimes, one may not get the positive response that he desires from a would-be source of succor. In such cases, king Solomon advises further, “By long forbearing is a prince persuaded, and a soft tongue breaketh the bone” (Proverbs 25: 15). Such was the case with a woman of Canaan who besought Jesus to heal her daughter who was ‘grievously vexed with a devil’: “But he answered and said, I am not sent but unto the lost sheep of the house of Israel…, It is not meet to take the children’s bread, and cast it to dogs. And she said, Truth Lord: yet the dogs eat of the crumbs which fall from their masters’ table. Then Jesus answered and said unto her, O woman, great is thy faith: be it unto thee even as thou wilt. And her daughter was made whole from that very hour.” – Matthew 15:26-28.
