Theme:THE FUTILITY OF WORLDLY WISDOM

Text: “And I brethren, when I came to you, came not with excellency of speech or of wisdom, declaring unto you the testimony of God.” – 1 Corinthians 2:1.

Comment: In the text for today, Apostle Paul gives an understanding that the wisdom of the world sounds very impressive. People love to see one display knowledge in their skills including the preaching of the gospel of Christ. Paul in his utterance tries to let us know that in preaching the gospel it should not be done to please men to be applauded so as to receive attention to ourselves. Everything should be done to the glory of God Almighty. (1 Corinthians 2:2, 4; 1 Corinthians 10:31). Wisdom or knowledge of this world puffs up (1 Corinthians 8:1) and leads to one’s downfall. The Apostle shows that God did not send him to preach in Corinth with words of eloquent wisdom. To do so would risk display of pride and arrogance. Like what Apostle Peter said; “If any man speak, let him speak as the oracles of God; if any man minister, let him do it as of the ability which God giveth: that God in all things may be glorified through Jesus Christ, to whom be praise and dominion for ever and ever. Amen.” – 1 Peter 4:11.
