Theme: SEEK YE FIRST THE KINGDOM OF GOD

Text:  “And Jesus answered and said unto her, Martha, Martha, thou art careful and troubled about many things: But one thing is needful: and Mary hath chosen that good part, which shall not be taken away from her.” – Luke 10:41, 42.

Comment:  Our Lord Jesus Christ made this statement when he visited the home of the two sisters, Mary and Martha. Jesus Christ and his disciples were friends to this family of faithful disciples, as could be seen from the fact that when Lazarus died, Christ said “Our friend Lazarus sleepeth”.  (John 11:11) The hospitality accorded our Saviour by the sisters could therefore be understood.  Martha was anxious to ensure that the Lord was properly provided for and refreshed when he had the chance to visit. But Mary seized the opportunity to ask as many questions as possible. Martha had to appeal to Christ to ask Mary to help her. But to her surprise, what she got was a rebuke for paying attention more to the food than to hearing the word of God. The point is that Christ knew Mary was interested in his welfare.  But to him the food was not as important as using the opportunity to gather as much as one could in terms of knowledge, from the Master himself. We should copy Mary’s example of earnestness in pursuing her quest for knowledge. Jesus Christ told the Samaritan woman: “Whosoever drinketh of this water shall thirst again: But whosoever drinketh of the water that I shall give him shall never thirst; but the water that I shall give him shall be in him a well of water springing up into everlasting life.” – John 4:13, 14.
