Theme: THE VOICE OF CONSCIENCE

Text: “And they which heard it, being convicted by their own conscience, went out one by one, beginning at the eldest, even unto the last: and Jesus was left alone, and the woman standing in the midst.” – John 8:9.

Comment: To the godly man, the inner voice of conscience serves as a private “policeman” that guides him against evil conduct or practices. When out of negligence or distraction one gets careless and carried away, a simple reminder by the conscience jolts such a person back to order and reality. The text of today highlights the incidence when an adulterous woman was brought before Christ in those days. The challenge posed to the Scribes and Pharisees by Jesus Christ was that he who is without sin should cast the first stone. This challenge pricked their consciences, and they all went away one after the other being found guilty by their consciences. They were thus morally and spiritually unqualified to judge the adulterous woman. Many people today take pleasure in carrying themselves about with an air of ‘holier-than-thou” attitude even when they are chronic sinners, they pretend to be perfect while castigating their fellow men for every little error. – Matthew 7:1-5; Romans 2:1-3, 20-24.
