Text: “And Abel, he also brought of the firstlings of his flock and of the fat thereof. And the LORD had respect unto Abel and to his offering. But unto Cain and to his offering he had not respect…” – Genesis 4: 4, 5.
Comment: Whenever we appear before God with our offerings, vows and special thanksgivings, we must come with that which is acceptable unto God and not lame or corruptible offerings. Addressing the Jews who offered unacceptable offerings to God, the Bible says: “But cursed be the deceiver, which hath in his flock a male, and voweth, and sacrificeth unto the Lord a corrupt thing: for I am a great King, saith the LORD of hosts, and my name is dreadful among the heathen.” (Malachi 1:14) The story of the offerings of Cain and Abel as highlighted in today’s key text shows that God does not accept offerings that are tainted with sin, known as polluted offerings. (Malachi 1:7, 8; Deuteronomy 15:21) The Holy Bible says that we must make it a point of duty to first settle our differences with our brothers and sisters before offering gifts and sacrifices to God. – Matthew 5:23, 24.
