Text: “In that day, he which shall be upon the housetop, and his stuff in the house, let him not come down to take it away: and he that is in the field, let him likewise not return back. Remember Lot’s wife.” – Luke 17:31,32.
Comment: The text for today was the statement of our Lord and Master Jesus Christ to the effect that worshippers of God should ponder over the object lessons from the unfortunate story of Lot’s wife at the destruction of Sodom and Gomorrah. The iniquity of the people of Sodom and Gomorrah was so much that there was not found up to ten righteous persons there for the Lord to spare the cities in line with the plea of Abraham. – Genesis 18:23-33.
When the angels were about to commence the destruction of the cities, they gave definite instructions to Lot, his wife and his two daughters to wit: “…Escape for thy life; look not behind thee, neither stay thou in all the plain; escape to the mountain, lest thou be consumed.” (Genesis 19:17) Unfortunately, Lot’s wife disobeyed when she looked back and became a pillar of salt. A striking lesson to be learnt here is that disobedience to the instruction of God can instantly result in dire consequences. Again those in the race of life should forge ahead and not look back to the world of materialism and iniquity St. Peter wrote: “…And turning the cities of Sodom and Gomorrah into ashes condemned them with an overthrow, making them an ensample unto those that after should live ungodly…” – 2 Peter 2:4,6,12,13.
