Theme: THE SIN OF DISOBEDIENCE

Introduction

Sin is the act of breaking the laws, commandments or instructions of God.  It is an act that goes against moral or right conduct. To this end, St John said “Sin is the transgression of the law”, and that “All unrighteousness is sin”. (1 John 3:4; 5:17) The very act of refusing to obey the law of God is disobedience to the core, and this will incur the anger of God on one.

In the next few days, we will be reflecting on the moral lessons from the cases of disobedience in the Bible, as well as, Biblical admonitions on the need to desist from acts of disobedience.

Text: “And you hath he quickened, who were dead in trespasses and sins; Wherein in time past ye walked according to the course of this world, according to the prince of the power of the air, the spirit that now worketh in the children of disobedience.” – Ephesians 2:1,2.

Comment: The text for today makes mention of the “children of disobedience” that is, people who are given to breaking the laws of God at the instance of the Devil.  King David stated, “The wicked are estranged from the womb: they go astray as soon as they be born, speaking lies.” (Psalm 58:3) In his letter to the Christians at Rome, St. Paul stated that God gave the ungodly a reprobate mind such that they give themselves up to homosexuality for which they will not escape punishment. He wrote: “Being filled with all unrighteousness, fornication, wickedness, covetousness, maliciousness; full of envy, murder, debate, deceit, malignity; whisperers, Backbiters, haters of God, despiteful, proud, boasters, inventors of evil things, disobedient to parents, Without understanding, covenantbreakers, without natural affection, implacable, unmerciful.” – Romans 1:29-31. See also Exodus 20:1-17; Leviticus 18:22; 20:13.

Having been called into God’s Organization as children of Light, we are admonished not to engage in sinful acts because those who do such will not enter the Kingdom of God but will face His wrath. This was expressly stated by St Paul thus: “…For this ye know that no whoremonger, nor unclean person, nor covetous man, who is an Idolater, hath any inheritance in the Kingdom of Christ and of God. Let no man deceive you with vain words: for because of these things cometh the wrath of God on the children of disobedience”. – Ephesians 5:3-6.
