Theme: Christians and Vows

Text: “And she vowed a vow, and said. O LORD of hosts, if thou wilt indeed look on the affliction of thine handmaid, and remember me, and not forget thine handmaid, but will give unto thine handmaid a man child, then I will give him unto the LORD all the days of his life, and there shall no razor come upon his head”. – 1 Samuel 1:11.

Comment:  A striking example of a faithful worshipper of God who made a vow and kept to it was Hannah, one of the wives of Elkanah. Peninnah, the other wife of Elkanah, ridiculed her ceaselessly because she was barren. In the distress of the senseless taunts on her, Hannah, “in bitterness of her soul” went to the temple and committed her grief to the LORD. (1 Samuel 1:10-16) As a loving Father Who takes cognizance of the plight of His children, the Almighty God gives succour to His worshippers, so that Satan does not take advantage of their unfortunate situations to overthrow their faith. (1 Corinthians 10:13; 2  Peter 2:9) Those who trust in Him are filled with joyful expectations as the wisest of his days, King Solomon says, “The blessing of the LORD, it maketh rich, and he addeth no sorrow with it” – Proverbs 10:22.
