Text: “Count not thine handmaid for a daughter of Belial: for out of the abundance of my complaint and grief have I spoken hitherto.” – 1 Samuel 1:16.
Comment: Hannah was a woman of great faith who endured the absurdity of Peninnah’s taunts on her childless condition. In the “bitterness of her soul”, she cried to the LORD for a man-child promising to give him back to the service of the LORD. “And she vowed a vow, and said, O LORD of hosts, if thou wilt indeed look on the affliction of thine handmaid, and remember me, and not forget thine handmaid, but wilt give unto thine handmaid a man child, then I will give him unto the LORD all the days of his life.” (1 Samuel 1:11) In the passage of time, the LORD blessed her with a male child whom she called “Samuel” meaning “ask of the LORD”. After weaning, she took the child to Eli the priest, for the commencement of his clerical order, in line with her vow. “For this child I prayed, and the LORD hath given me my petition which I asked of him: Therefore also I have lent him to the LORD; as long as he liveth he shall be lent to the LORD.” (1 Samuel 1:27,28) For her liberality, the LORD added three more sons and two daughters to her. – 1 Samuel 2:21.
