Theme: LORD, WHO SHALL ABIDE IN THY TABERNACLES?

Text: “Also I said, It is not good that ye do: ought ye not to walk in the fear of our God because of the reproach of the heathen our enemies?” – Nehemiah 5:9.

Comment: Writing further on the qualifications for remaining in the secret place of the Most High, the “scripture of truth” states that the individual should have sympathy when it comes to financial dealings among his fellowship as not to put out “his money to usury”. (Psalm 15:5) During his tenure as governor over Judah, Nehemiah did not mince words in upbraiding the elites for exacting usury from their poor brethren, even compelling them to make refund. (Nehemiah 5:6-12) The law against usury forbade the Israelites from charging interest for loans given to their fellow compatriots while they could do so to non-Israelites. (Exodus 22:25; Deuteronomy 23:19, 20) This ordinance is to the effect that no one takes undue advantage over the indigent ones among God’s people by way of exploiting them. – Proverbs 19:17; 1 Timothy 6:17, 18; 1 John 3:17, 18.
