Theme: THE SIGNIFICANCE OF A GOOD PERSONAL IDENTITY

Text: “And Jabez was more honourable than his brethren: and his mother called his name Jabez, saying, Because I bare him with sorrow. And Jabez called on the God of Israel, saying, Oh that thou wouldest bless me indeed, and enlarge my coast, and that thine hand might be with me, and that thou wouldest keep me from evil, that it may not grieve me! And God granted him that which he requested.” – 1 Chronicles 4:9, 10.

Comment: Jabez was an offspring of Judah. His “name” denoted the unfortunate circumstance of his birth, and it worked against him in many ways, though he “was more honourable than his brethren”. Not satisfied with his unfortunate situation, “Jabez called on the God of Israel to keep him from evil. “God granted him that which he requested”. Anyone who is burdened by an evil name or situation should employ the help of God, and seek fervent prayers of elders of the Church. (James 5:14, 16) Such ones should abhor sin or wickedness of any kind, take stock of themselves, change their ways and exercise implicit faith in God with Whom there is no impossibility. (Jeremiah 32:27, 17; Matthew 17:20. See also Hebrews 11:6) The man born blind who was healed by Jesus Christ stated, “Now we know that God heareth not sinners: but if any man be a worshipper of God, and doeth his will, him he heareth.” – John 9:31.
