Theme: ANGER: ITS CAUSES, EFFECTS, CONSEQUENCES AND MANAGEMENT

Text: “A man of great wrath shall suffer punishment: for if thou deliver him, yet thou must do it again. Hear counsel, and receive instruction, that thou mayest be wise in thy latter end” – Proverbs 19:19, 20.

Comment: One needs to know how anger affects people in order to understand how to manage it. When one gets angry, the brain shunts blood away from the gut and towards the muscles, in preparation for physical exertion; body muscles tense up; causing one to experience a burst of energy lasting up to several minutes, which is behind the common angry desire to take immediate protective action. At the same time, the adrenal glands flood the body with stress hormones, such as adrenaline and cortisol. The heart rate, blood pressure and respiration increase, the body temperature rises and the skin perspires. At this stage, seeing that “the wrath of man worketh not the righteousness of God” (James 1:20), one needs the Spirit of God to guide him; to listen to wise counsel, to rein in his emotions (Proverbs 4:1), and apply anger management tips available – wisdom, faith, patience and endurance. King Solomon stated, “The discretion of a man deferreth his anger; and it is his glory to pass over a transgression” – Proverbs 19:11.
