Theme: THE SIGNICANCE OF THE NAMES AND TITLES OF GOD ALMIGHTY

Text: “That men may know that thou, whose name alone is JEHOVAH, art the most high over all the earth.” – Psalm 83:18.

Comment: The exclusive name which God Almighty took to Himself, is JEHOVAH. It means “self-existing One” , the eternal living One or One Who lives from everlasting to everlasting. The name must be held in awe and reverenced by the children of men. Writing on the name, Jehovah, Smith’s Bible Dictionary points out that the name signifies “self-derived and permanent existence”, adding: “The Jews scrupulously avoided every mention of this name of God, substituting in its stead one or other of the words with whose proper vowel-points it may happen to be written. This custom, which had its origin in reverence, was founded upon an erroneous rendering of Leviticus 24:16 (which prescribes death penalty for blasphemy)  from which it was inferred that the mere utterance of the name constituted a capital offence. According to Jewish tradition, it was pronounced but once a year, by the high priest on the day of atonement when he entered the holy of holies…” Because He is Almighty, He would, as the text says,  in due cause demonstrate His power in destroying the devil and his hosts at the Battle of Armageddon.  “Fury is not in me: who would set the briers and thorns against me in battle? I would go through them, I would burn them together. Or let him take hold of my strength, that he may make peace with me; and he shall make peace with me.” –  Isaiah 27:4, 5.
