THE SIGNIFICANCE OF A GOOD PERSONAL IDENTITY
Text: “Let no man despise thy youth; but be thou an example of the believers, in word, in conversation, in charity, in spirit, in faith, in purity; Till I come, give attendance to reading, to exhortation, to doctrine…” – 1 Timothy 4:12, 13.
Comment: Timothy was a spiritual son of Saint Paul whom he groomed early in life (2 Timothy 1: 1-3), testified of and instructed to “continue thou in the things which thou hast learned and hast been assured of… And that from a child thou hast known the holy Scriptures, which are able to make thee wise unto salvation through faith which is in Christ Jesus.” (2 Timothy 3:14, 15) He advised, “Flee also youthful lusts: but follow righteousness, faith, charity, peace, with them that call on the Lord out of a pure heart.” (2 Timothy 2:22) King Solomon stated that, “a man’s wisdom maketh his face to shine, and the boldness of his face shall be changed.” (Ecclesiastes 8:1; Proverbs 4:5-9) There is no strength to work or discern in old age (2 Samuel 19:35), hence “It is good for a man that he bear the yoke” of Christ “in his youth”. (Lamentation 3:27) King Solomon advised, “Remember now thy Creator in the days of thy youth…”, otherwise one would be despised and have regrets at the end. – Ecclesiastes 12:1.
