Theme: WE SHALL ALL REAP WHAT WE SOW
Text: “And Jonathan stripped himself of the robe that was upon him, and gave it to David, and his garments, even to his sword, and to his bow, and to his girdle.” – 1 Samuel 18:4.
Comment: A striking instance of sowing good and reaping good is that of Jonathan and David. Due to Jonathan’s love for David, he handed David some of his personal belongings to use as could be seen in the text for today. Jonathan spoke good about David to his father, King Saul. (1 Samuel 19:1-7) Again, Jonathan prevented David from been killed by his father when he gave David a sign to escape for his dear life. (1 Samuel 20:1-42) Jonathan even expressed to David that he desired David to become King, while he (Jonathan) would serve as David’s deputy. (1 Samuel 23:15-18) Unfortunately, Jonathan died in battle against the philistines which made David lament bitterly for him. (2 Sam 1:19-27) For all the good deeds done for David by Jonathan, David repaid Jonathan by doing good to Jonathan’s family especially one of his sons called Mephibosheth (who was lame at his feet) by giving him all the property of Saul, allowing him to eat at the King’s table as well as instructing a man called Ziba and his household to serve as attendants to Mephibosheth all the days of his life. (2 Samuel 9:1-13). Truly, the good legacy parents leave behind will be enjoyed by their children.
