Theme: Fruits of the Spirit

Text: “And though I have the gift of prophecy, and understand all mysteries, and all knowledge; and though I have all faith, so that I could remove mountains, and have not charity, I am nothing.” – 1 Corinthians 13:2.

Comment: One of the fruits of the Spirit is charity or love. It involves not only the giving of alms but in a deep spiritual sense, the love of God and love for one’s neighbour. Spiritual charity is the understanding in pointing out errors or flaws in a person’s character that would bring about the desired change of attitude or character transformation. “Thou shalt not hate thy brother in thine heart: thou shalt in any wise rebuke thy neighbour, and not suffer sin upon him.” (Leviticus 19:17) As in the leading text for today, Apostle Paul’s statement that no matter how knowledgeable and pious that a person appears to be, if he lacks the virtue of charity the “man’s religion is vain”. – James 1:26
