Theme: LORD, WHO SHALL ABIDE IN THY TABERNACLES?
Text: “Keep thee far from a false matter; and the innocent and righteous slay thou not: for I will not justify the wicked. And thou shalt take no gift: for the gift blindeth the wise, and perverteth the words of the righteous.” – Exodus 23:7, 8.
Comment: It is common knowledge that, in defiance of God’s commandment, some persons, in their craze for wealth, position, fame, etc., take “reward against the innocent”, because they see them as vulnerable, and having no one to come to their aid. JEHOVAH, the God of infinite love, has always expressed His hate for oppression against the poor (Exodus 23:6), widows and fatherless children (Exodus 22:22-24), and even against strangers (Exodus 22:21; 23:9). Even as mortals, our laws forbid conviction of an innocent person hence, one of the cornerstones of the American legal system is Blackstone’s formulation which holds that “it is better that 10 guilty people go free than one innocent person suffer.” The Judge of all the earth pronounces woe on those who justify the wicked, (Isaiah 5:20, 23) and strongly warns His people against “the gain of oppressions”. He assured His children of His blessings when they desist from “holding of bribes, that stoppeth his ears from hearing of blood, and shutteth his eyes from seeing evil”. – Isaiah 33:15-17.
