Theme: THE SIGNIFICANCE OF A GOOD PERSONAL IDENTITY

Text: “Be not deceived: evil communications corrupt good manners. Awake to righteousness, and sin not; for some have not the knowledge of God: I speak this to your shame.” – 1 Corinthians 15:33, 34.

Comment: Friends influence a person’s character and identity: “Show me your friends, and I will tell you who you are.” Good names are often superimposed by one’s character, behaviour, beliefs, heroic achievements or negative commitments; which make some suffer severe consequences for crimes committed by their acquaintances. King Jehoshaphat of Judah had troubles because of his ungodly union with King Ahab of Israel. Jehu the son of Hanani the Seer rebuked him saying, “Shouldest thou help the ungodly, and love them that hate the LORD? therefore is wrath upon thee from before the LORD.” (2 Chronicles 19:1-3) God’s people are commanded to carry their bodies in sanctification and honour, to abstain from fornication (1 Thessalonians 4:3-5); to “mark them which cause divisions and offences… and avoid them”; not to keep company or eat with fornicators, covetous persons and anyone that walks disorderly; not to “be partaker of other men’s sins”. – Romans 16:17; 1 Corinthians 5: 9-11; 1 Timothy 5:22.
