Theme: Fortitude

Text: “According to my earnest expectation and my hope, that in nothing I shall be ashamed, but that with all boldness, as always, so now also Christ shall be magnified in my body, whether it be by life, or by death.” – Philippians 1:20.

Comment: In this verse, Apostle Paul combines expectation (hope) and courage (faith). He has the strong hope (belief) that he will not be ashamed to do the work of God, to face the world, and to confront tribulation. Shame comes when we fall from God’s standard and fail to return to the path of truth. When we prove that we have hope and faithfully endure, the name of God is honoured. Of course, we believe that any man who honours God will be rewarded in due course by God’s grace. Apostle Peter declared: “But the God of all grace, who hath called us unto his eternal glory by Christ Jesus, after that ye have suffered a while, make you perfect, stablish, strengthen, settle you.” – 1 Peter 5:10.
