Theme: PRAYING AND WAITING ON THE LORD ALWAYS

Text: “But the angel said unto him, Fear not, Zacharias: for thy prayer is heard; and thy wife Elisabeth shall bear thee a son, and thou shalt call his name John. And thou shalt have joy and gladness; and many shall rejoice at his birth. For he shall be great in the sight of the Lord…” – Luke 1:13-15.

Comment: Zacharias and Elizabeth who were the parents of the prophet, John the Baptist, prayed for a child and waited patiently for God to answer their prayer. At a time they least expected, an angel of God announced to Zacharias that his prayer had been heard and that his wife Elizabeth would bear a son to be called John, as stated in the text for today. When Zecharias heard this, he was doubtful as to how his wife could still conceive as he and his wife were very old. We must guard against doubt for it is an obstacle to God’s blessings. – James 1:5-7.

However, as there is no impossibility with God as stated in Jeremiah 32: 17, Elizabeth truly became pregnant and gave birth to the famous prophet, John the Baptist. “And it came to pass, that, as soon as the days of his ministration were accomplished, he departed to his own house. And after those days his wife Elisabeth conceived, and hid herself five months, saying,  Thus hath the Lord dealt with me in the days wherein he looked on me, to take away my reproach among men.” (Luke 1:23-25)  In due time “she brought forth a son. And her neighbours and her cousins heard how the Lord had shewed great mercy upon her; and they rejoiced with her”. (Luke 1:57, 58) Indeed, God is able “to do exceeding abundantly above all that we ask or think” by His grace. – Ephesians 3:20,21.
