Text: “And Adonibezek said, Threescore and ten kings, having their thumbs and their great toes cut off, gathered their meat under my table: as I have done, so God hath requited me. And they brought him to Jerusalem, and there he died.” – Judges 1:7.
Comment: The key text for today unquestionably indicates the certainty of the law of retributive justice. Adonibezek, a Canaanitish king who, having subdued seventy of the chiefs that were around him, made an attack against the armies of Judah and Simeon, but was defeated and brought as a captive to Jerusalem, where his thumbs and great toes were cut off. As stated in the text, He lamented and confessed that God had requited him for his cruelty to the seventy kings whom he had subdued. (Judges 1:1-7) Indeed, “As righteousness tendeth to life: so he that pursueth evil pursueth it to his own death.” (Proverbs 11:19) Another important lesson from this story is that we should not oppress or become cruel to people. The milk of kindness should never exhaust in our bosoms as we shall receive our reward by the grace of God. – Psalm 41:1-3; Proverbs 29:7.
