Theme: Fruits of the Spirit

Text: “The Lord is not slack concerning his promise, as some men count slackness; but is longsuffering to us-ward, not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance.” – 2 Peter 3:9.

Comment: Longsuffering is a virtue. Its definition “includes such words as patience, even-tempered, and forbearance”. It is one of the fruits of the Spirit that manifests itself in one’s ability to show equanimity or patience in spite of troubles, griefs, persecutions, wants or needs.  As in the leading text, Apostle Peter was extolling this virtue in the Almighty Father which some of the ungodly regard as weakness on His part. This is complete lack of understanding and ignorance of the ways of the LORD as He is only giving them opportunity to repent or else, they will be destroyed at the end. – Ecclesiastes 8:11-13; Ezekiel 18:30-32. This virtue inspired Moses, the prophet, to proclaim, thus: “The LORD is longsuffering, and of great mercy, forgiving iniquity and transgression, and by no means clearing the guilty…” – Numbers 14:18
